Askold's Grave

Askold's Grave

On the right bank of the Dnieper is a park "Askold`s Grave". Is This   beautiful place, shrouded in mystery, it was shown in many works of art, and today attracts tourists from all over the world.

According to legend, in this place in 882 Prince Oleg of Novgorod in order to seize power in Kiev killed   Varyag Askold. Here he was buried. In the 10th century at the burial site of Askold Princess Olga built the Church of St. Nicholas (Askold was baptized Nicholas). Later, the church was reorganized into a monastery. At the monastery cemetery appeared. Askold stone sarcophagus was stored in the basement of the monastery.

At Askold grave buried   rich and noble people   Kiev. Many tombs and graves have cultural and historical value. Several times the cemetery was closed and opened again. In different periods of history in the Askold`s grave were buried completely different people. For example, Baron Steinheil, German soldiers, the heroes of the Soviet Union, known physicians, liberators Kiev.

Now Askold`s Grave   transformed into a park. The graves were moved to other places. The only thing left - restored church of St. Nicholas. In the park stands a wooden cross in memory of the young patriots who died in battle with the Bolsheviks. Also installed an architectural sign in honor of another event described in the chronicles - stay on these hills Ugric peoples.

The park is very beautiful, from all sides enveloped in greenery. There is always an atmosphere of calm and tranquility. You can get to the park on the subway. The nearest station - "Arsenal".
