St Thecla Chapel
On the outskirts of the city Berestechko rises three-meter mound. At this mound stands a small chapel of St. Thecla. What is interesting about this chapel?
Chapel of St. Thecla was built in the 17th century. It is a symbol that occurred in 1658 tragedy. In that year, after a raid, Tatars razed the city to the ground. Many residents were killed and hundreds taken prisoner. Among the prisoners were nuns Catholic monastery with her abbess flowed or Thekla. Legend has it that for refusing to follow the prisoner horde of the Crimean Khan, nuns and 500 women were executed. And their dead bodies invaders made their way through the swamp. Therefore, a chapel, which now stands at the grave of these women is called martyr Thecla. This is one of the most tragic pages in the history of Ukraine.
