St Mary of the Snows Church
Church of Mary of the Snows - one of the oldest buildings of the historic city. It is known that the first building was erected in the 14th century. It was built near the center of the city, close to the shopping area. The founders of the church began visiting the Germans, which in Lviv at that time there were many.
The building was made of wood, it was restored several times, increased, rebuilt. The most dramatic changes occurred in the mid-17th century, since the multi-tiered temple clothed in a high stone wall. To maintain the integrity of the outer and inner temple restoration carried out every 50-70 years. In 1890 the famous architect named Yuri Zaharevich creates a project to rebuild the church.
After four years of construction appearance of an ancient temple has changed significantly. He acquired a well recognizable features of Catholic Basilica, where the central nave altar elongated. During the restoration of the 19th century many of the original frescoes in the church have been lost due to dusty repairs. Artist Lepsha were inflicted new painting. He created a series of murals in an interesting style that mimics the mosaic pattern.
Modern Lady of the Snows Church belongs to the Greek Catholic diocese and is adjacent to some of the important landmarks of ancient Lviv: Dominican cathedral and the church of St. Nicholas.
