St John's Cathedral in Sambor

Catholic Church of the Beheading of St. John the Baptist is the most impressive building in Sambor and literally towers over the city. The magnificent temple was built in 1530, the author of the project - Polish architect Jozef Tarnovchik. The church served as not only spiritual, but also defensive function.
It is assumed that in the 14th century there was a Roman Catholic parish with a small wooden church that after the attack on the tail of the Tatars and Galicia in 1498 burned to the ground. And on the site of construction of wood built stone. Alas, the fire did not spare the new church in 1637. In the history of it burned 4 times, but the religious community to restore it. The architecture of this building visible features of Renaissance and Gothic.
Now the front of the church visitors are greeted by a stone Pope John Paul II. A monument to him was erected in 2007. We also know that from 1864 to 1865 in this temple served as Bishop Joseph Pelchar, which the Catholic Church recognizes the saints.
