Former Central Choral Synagogue
Among various unique architectural monuments of Zaporozhye occupy a special place of worship houses the Jewish communities. These homes were in this region after the decree of Empress Catherine II.
The decree that allowed the Jews to obtain citizenship in Tauris and Ekaterinoslav provinces, to live and work there. One of these houses of worship, deserves special attention - the former central choral synagogue in the city of Zaporozhye.
The history of the central synagogue
At a time when the county was called Zaporozhye town Aleksandrovsk, rushed here a considerable number of believers and for the money the community built the first house of worship, which later became the main Choral Synagogue. Another was built Central Choral Synagogue Street Trotska (now - street Chekistov). This incredibly beautiful building is well preserved, having survived troubled times: high ceilings, ornate moldings, wide marble staircase leading to the prayer hall, and the same beautiful wide windows.
At first, it was also a house of prayer, and the Central Choral Synagogue this structure was in 1909. Another called it a synagogue Leszczynski, linking with the name of the synagogue warden, who also had an apartment house. But in 1929 the house away, transferring it to the House of Physical Culture named after the Red Army.
Since then and until today the building is not being used for its original purpose. Now, already in the former Central Choral Synagogue, the offices of various companies and commercial firms.
