Castle Hill, Liubech

On the territory of modern Ukraine there are cities that were founded at the beginning of the first millennium. One of them - Liubech . One reason for the long life of the village is its location. On the one hand Liubech stands on the banks of the Dnieper, and on the other - is a first boundary of the Slavs and Polovtsian, and now - Ukraine and Belarus.

The first mention of the settlement refers to the year 882. After more than 200 years, it is in Lyubech gathered Slavic princes to put an end to the brotherly indiscriminately and join forces against a common enemy - Polovtsian. According to one version, the meeting took place in the realm of Vladimir Monomakh, was also present at the congress. The most convenient place to meet influential persons became a fortified castle on a high mountain.

Mid-12th century brought the feudal Arrange and many wars. During one raid the castle on the mountain burned previously removed from it all valuables. Although the castle has been restored, the locals still call the Castle hill. At the foot of the hill and at the top it has two of the monument. One is set in 1982 in memory of the date of the founding of the city. A second meeting is reminiscent of princes in 1097. It is designed as a chronicler, sitting on a pedestal decorated with the faces of princes.

At the end of the 50s of the last century archaeological team has excavated on Castle Hill. It turned out that people lived in the area at the beginning of the Iron Age. The castle was intended not only for safe living, but also a lot of defense. Stocks of food to residents of the castle could be enough for the siege long year. On the defensive ability of the castle show the massive walls of oak, surrounding the castle and the entire city from all sides. On the inner side of the fence were special boilers with decomposition under them firewood for heating the water and resin. Such a "brew" helped throw the enemy off the walls of the castle.

The top of Castle Hill is an area the size of 35 to 100 meters, so all the buildings located close to each other. The castle was surrounded by a wooden 2-meter shafts, filled with clay. They towered walls and towers. On the inside of the living and household premises, the roof of which serves as a platform for combat. On the south side of the wide crescent located shaft, and inside it was trading quarter. Shaft and ditch partially survived to the present day.

To be in the castle, should overcome the drawbridge, underground tunnel, pass the steep road and the gate with three barriers. And after passing the guard, you need special course to climb the wall of the castle. If the enemy overcame all obstacles, the defenders of the castle could hide in a separate tower-dungeon. For the three-storey rectangular tower stood the prince`s palace, three indoor tower. About towers were a church and a cemetery. From the palace and the church of the gate were underground passages are the same in different directions from the mountains and were ways of retreat.
