Pniv Castle

Pniewski Castle - one of the unique historical monuments of Ukraine. Throughout its history it has played an important role in the events that took place in the lands Prykarpattia.

Pniewski castle appeared here during the decline of Galicia-Volyn principality. Polish magnates, using this, began to actively seize the lands of the Carpathian region. So (in the 16th century) at the foot of Stargory appeared Pniewski castle. It was built by the Polish feudal lords of Hungarian origin - Kuropatvami. Castle served simultaneously several important functions.

With his appearance attributed the origin of the local settlement Nadvornaya. The castle was located in a very convenient location. Through it passed one of the largest trade routes. Here a little later established customs. This place has been attracting merchants and artisans who settled and near the castle. Also in the settlement began to live some servants of the fortress.

Pniewski castle, at that time, was the most fortified construction in Ukraine. He served a defensive function, everything was thought to detail. Thick walls were connected with strong high towers, which stood for a bit in common structure. This makes it easy to view and fire all directions, leading to the castle. Entrance guarded huge artificial moat. On the other hand lock securely guarded by cliffs of the mountains. The castle walls were made of gray ashlar, sometimes used red bricks. The castle is not just experienced a heavy siege Cossacks and Turks.

In the 19th century, after a series of destruction, the castle lost its original meaning. Local residents began to stretch the walls of the castle of building materials. To this day is well preserved only the northern wall of the castle. It has traces of the original stucco building. Remained standing a few towers survived underground dungeons.
