Sunken Ships Monument

Sevastopol - Hero City and the town of Fame Russian fleet repeatedly to sacrifice themselves for the sake of protecting the city. Sunken Ships Monument is one of the most interesting sights of the city.

Back in 1854 the position of Russian troops in the Crimean War was extremely difficult and there was a real danger exit Anglo-French fleet on a raid of Sevastopol. Therefore, the command decided to create a barrage of obsolete sailing ships that were supposed to block the entrance to North Bay. 50 years later, in front of the seaside boulevard of Sebastopol, was erected a monument to perpetuate the memory of the Russian ships sunk in the name of protecting the city. The monument is located on a cliff jutting out of the sea, and is a powerful granite base, which was erected Corinthian column, the top of which is crowned by a statue of a bronze eagle. In the beak of an eagle stood a laurel wreath, on which rests the anchor. The height of the monument is effectively equal to 17 meters, making it easily visible with the seaside boulevard, which is fixed to the wall anchors with sunken ships.
