Synagogue Lifshitz

Synagogue Lifshitz

Synagogue Lifshitz exists in Vinnitsa for a long time and is located on Cathedral Street. It is the only synagogue in the city, which is still in effect.

The history of the synagogue foundation Lifshitz

Once upon a time a Jew from Vinnitsa Lifshitz, quite a wealthy man, he decided to marry. The parents of his wife as a gift gave him land in the city center. Earth did not need him, he decided to give it to the Jewish community. The community refused to accept the land, as it is not involved in the affairs of the ground. Then the owner decided on their own resources to build a synagogue and to give the community. So there was a synagogue Lifshitz. Its subsequent history was no less interesting, but difficult.

When it was the Soviet regime, the synagogue and another 13 that existed in the city, was closed. Here opened a club. During the occupation by the Germans in the building to keep things murdered Jews, after the war, then arranged the Philharmonic, and since 1985 to 1992 building was empty. Only after Ukraine`s independence the building handed back possession of the Jewish community. To achieve this only became possible in 1995. Then came the phase of rehabilitation and reconstruction of old and ruined building with the help of patrons and Hasid Label Surkis from the US.

Since 1997, the synagogue Lifshitz reopened its doors to all comers. Today we are not only conducted the prayers and teachings, and organized cultural and educational life in the form of concerts, lectures, at the synagogue there is a large library. Today in Vinnitsa Jewish community has about 3,500 Jews.
