One of the first libraries Odessa Ukraine became the Gorky library, created at the initiative of persons close to the edge governor MS Vorontsov. After its founding later began to open the library in the provincial boundary and cities of Ukraine and Russia.

As the present Count Vorontsov gave the library the rare collection of works that were the 600 volumes of classics in the French edition of Firmin Didot. - archaeologist P. Burachkova includes 176 volumes and others.
The growth of library collections Bitter forced several times to change the room.
- In 1883 the means Mayor G. Marazli was built a separate building, which was designed for the library and museum of the history of the Company.
- In 1907, the bookstore again notes relocation. This time, for her specially built building, which at that time was one of the best examples of architecture of the country. The project architect worked FP Nesturh.
- 1964 for the library is remarkable, because in this period it is scientific, informational and methodical center in southern Ukraine.
- In 1975 the Library. Gorky Regional features becomes universal depository country.
- In 1998, together with the Odessa Peace Council launched a gallery of portraits of philanthropists area. Two years later, the library is initiating a nationwide exhibition "Ukrainian book in Odessa Region", which later became regular and is held annually.
- Since 2002 began operating information center "Window on America", Internet center and an electronic reading room, supported by the US Embassy in Ukraine.
- September 2009 Library. Gorky received the status of a national institution.
The library
