European Square, Kiev

The history of European Square
The area had many different names. From the beginning, this area was called Evseykovoy valley. But the historical name is Horse area, because here were carried out horse fair. As the area of the territory was formed only in the 19th century during the construction of the road from the center of Podil. In 1805 it was renamed the Theatre in connection with the construction of the first theater in Kiev. The main architect was Andrei Melensky.
In the 1840s, the fountain in the center of the square was erected that betrayed her aesthetic. The theater was dismantled in 1851, recognizing it as an emergency. In its place was built the hotel "European". The main architect was Alexander Beretti. In honor of this area it has been renamed to the European. Although the name did not last long, because after a while again changed in the royal area.
Once in power, the Bolsheviks renamed the area of III International. And during the German occupation, it was planned to assign the name of Adolf Hitler. In Soviet times, and was known as the name of Stalin, Lenin Komsomol. After some time, the hotel was built on the site of the Lenin Museum. And altered it to Palace of Arts "Ukrainian House" in the time of a free Ukraine. In 1996, the area`s name was finally changed to European.

How to get there
