Brygidki Prison (women`s monastery of the Order of St. Brigida), Lviv
Prison "Brygidki" - Ukraine`s oldest prison, which is located in Lviv. Age of the building more than 400 years. It attracts tourists not only interested but also with local historians archaeologists.
The history of the monastery brygidkas
In ancient times there was a female in Sweden brygidkas order, called on behalf of its founder St. Bryhidy (life years 1302-1373), which differed great devotion. She founded the monastery and the Order of the Saviour, for which he was canonized.
- In 1614 was built a wooden monastery for girls from noble families. Its construction started with the permission of Archbishop funded by philanthropist Anna and Anna Poradovskoyi Fastkovskoyi.
- The house was built, the church of St. Peter chapel with an altar in Baroque style. In a slightly modified form of the church building exists today.
- In 1782, the Austrian authorities liquidated the monastery. In 1785 it was reconstructed in the male prison. Since all the buildings of the monastery were used only for keeping criminals and political prisoners.
- Established in September 1939 in Lviv Soviet government used to further "Brygidki" in prison. Officially it was called "prison number 4".
- At the end of June 1941 during the retreat en masse Bolsheviks shot the prisoners. June 10, 1941 were in jail 706 prisoners. In the list published in June 1941 shot 24-28 324 names named person.
Today "Brygidki" located in Lviv detention facility № 19. In this place brought prisoners from all areas, from which groups to organize transported to prison.
In 2008, considered the issue of the transfer of the prison complex, located in the center of the street Horodotska, on the outskirts of town.
