Cembalo Fortress
Twelve kilometers from the city of Sevastopol, in the south-eastern part of the Balaklava Bay, Mount Kastron are remnants of an ancient fortress Cembalo. It was founded by the Genoese in the middle of the 14th century and served as the defensive system of the ancient city.
The once majestic castle included a range of different structures. So in the upper part of a castle of St. Nicholas, who held the entire top of the cape Fiolent. On the one hand the castle defended rocky cliff above the sea, on the other - it was a rugged stone wall. Thus, the fort was almost impregnable, and some of its fragments have survived to our time.
Having been in this wondrous place, you can see the Consular round tower, whose height is about eighteen meters. Originally the tower consisted of three floors, on the top of which stood a combat area. On the ground floor there were strategic reserves of drinking water, which from sources deep in the mountains, a special pipeline supplied to the tower.
In the south-eastern side of the cape was the Castle of St. George, which was also protected by high defensive walls and towers of round, oval and square shapes. During the tour you will not only see once majestic temples and important economic structures, but also learn about the life of the local population in the Middle Ages.
Many archaeological finds suggest that the fortress was an active trade, not only in manufactured goods, food products, but also slaves. Each castle guarded by a few dozen shooters who have served under a clear military hierarchy. Cembalo Fortress was technically equipped much better than many other medieval towns. Extant historical documents tell that there was only heavy weapons. By the end of the 18th century castle gradually fell into disrepair. Today, tourists can see only small fragments remaining of fortifications, towers and retaining walls.
Sightseeing Cape Fiolent, admire the views from the top of its spectacular scenery and enjoy the extraordinary freshness of the local sea air. Also, pay attention to the plaque, located at the foot of the tower Donjon. This tower shows the heroic battles of the Soviet soldiers with Nazi invaders.
