Bakhchisaray Cave Monastery

One of the most revered Orthodox shrines Crimea - Holy Assumption Monastery, which is located on the slopes of the picturesque gorge Maryam Dere near Bakhchisarai. The exact date of the founding of the monastery is not known. According to legend, the first settlers were Greek monks fleeing from the cruel persecution of the Byzantine Empire.

On the origin of the monastery there is a legend which says about the appearance on the rock Mother of God with a burning candle near. People have removed it from the rock and brought into the house, but the next morning the icon back to its original place. Then everyone realized that the Mother of God willed that the icon remains on the rock. It happened on August 15 in the day of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin. Rock-cut temple in honor of this event was called the Assumption.

Over the years, the monastery has survived many upheavals - Turkish invasion, numerous wars, pogroms and destruction.

After World War II, the monastery was almost destroyed. Up until 1993, the monastery was empty. Now most of the buildings of the monastery is restored, and he again became home to have renounced the worldly life of the faithful.

Here comes a lot of pilgrims to the holy place of worship, pray, the famous icon of the Mother of God, called the "Three Hands". This sacred place has always been a desire to see the monastery with their own eyes and feel the awe of the holy faces.

The unique architecture of the monastery on a background of picturesque mountains of the Crimea, all this will not leave anyone indifferent. Amazing atmosphere of these places, preserved for centuries, leaves the most vivid impression.
