City gate, Satan

City gate in Satanov is a monument of town-planning and architecture of national significance of Ukraine. Made in the Renaissance style. Is part of the fortifications of the medieval city, protected southern entrance. The monument is one of the main landmarks of urban development in the building of the southern part of the city.

History of the City Gates in Satanov

The first city gates were laid in the 15th century, at the confluence of the river with an unnamed creek Zbruch (according to some sources, a small river Shandrova). In the 16th century they were rebuilt and became part of the fortifications of the city. However, it was destroyed in the second half of the 17th century.

It has survived gates, built by Adam Jerome Sieniawska in 1724. The architecture of the new gate is completely repeated predecessors, we added a decorative parapet.

After the loss of its defense mission at different times in the walls of the gate is:

1. Customs - Sataniv was on the bank of the river Zbruch by which until 1939 was the border between the first Russian Empire and Austria-Hungary, and later between the USSR and Poland;
2. Pantry rural consumer society - about it resembles a pile of fossilized salt in a corner room on the first floor;
3. Stable.

Today, the stone gate is the main architectural gem Satanova. The thickness of the walls up to 2 m, width directions - 8 m. And preserved remains of decoration, they are made ​​of white stone in the Baroque style.

A local businessman in 2009 is actively involved in the restoration of the gate, he cleaned up two floors, planned to rebuild the walls and roof of the update. Nearby grows a tourist complex - built hotel, restaurant and museum.
