Basilian Monastery, Uman

Basilian monastery built by Count Franciszek Potocki in 1765, one of the oldest buildings of Uman. In the possession of the monastery were two villages, schools and cells to stay ministers, as well as the town square, where the church stood.
Like all institutions of the rebellious time Uman Basilian center endured many hardships. The most tragic event occurred during the Peasants` War in 1768, when the rebels killed more than a hundred students. These events went down in history under the name "Massacre of Uman." But soon the life of the monastery continued.
Problems began after the entry of Uman in the Russian Empire. Polish uprising of 1830-1831 have left their mark. Three years later, the Russian authorities have eliminated Basilian monastery. First, the building housed a hospital, then a military barracks. In the Soviet years it housed army units.
In 2006 the building came under the control of the State Historical-Architectural Reserve "Old Uman." Now, despite the poor condition in the walls of the reserve regularly exhibitions, literary readings and art fairs. Thus the organizers continue to cultural and educational business educators and mentors monastery.
