Church of the Assumption, Dorohobuzh
Church of the Assumption in Dorogobuzh is one of the most ancient on Volhynia. Her story began in the 11th century. Then another small town was the center of the principality known family of Rurik. The temple was built on top of a specially poured for the purpose of the shaft.
Looking at this shrine, it is hard to imagine that once the temple stood in the middle of a large monastery. Orthodox monastery built here in the late 16th century Prince Vladimir Ostrog. Then the Church of the Assumption was capitally reconstructed. On the reconstruction of the evidence preserved fragments of ancient Russian plinfovoy masonry.
But not only Orthodox believers visited this shrine. In the Assumption Church services were held for the Greek Catholics. Unfortunately, made while two privately body to our time have not survived. Wooden bell tower, which can be seen today, was built at the church after the church was returned to the Orthodox congregation.
Assumption Church granted the status of a unique work of Ukrainian architecture of 11-17 centuries. This structure is clearly visible combination of traditions of ancient architecture, baroque and some later architectural elements.
