The city of Boryspil’ is usually associated with the main International Airport of Ukraine. However, not many people know that this city is considered to be one of the oldest in Central Naddniprianschyna. Ruins of ancient fortifications of Old Russian settlement L’to are located on its territory. For the first time it was recorded in the early 9th century and that chronicle told us about the death of Prince Borys on the River Alta, as well as about the fratricidal war of 1015-1019 years. The terrain, where the events had developed, became known as Borys-Field (in Ukrainian Borys-Pole). It is believed, that this name is associated with bids. In ancient times these lands were used for trading, so one could advantageously buy or sell something and get a barysh (meaning “profit”). Over time this word transferred in Baryshpil’ and presently – Boryspil’.
The first thing you will see at the entrance to the city is the Knyshovyi Memorial Park Complex, which was created at the site of an ancient burial ground. Landscape design of the complex resembles an island of Ukrainian culture in miniature. The complex consists of three main zones: memorial, church and park. In the memorial zone there is the grave of scientist-ethnographer Pavlo Chubyns’kyi. Park zone will attract you with its shady alleys, where you can have a rest enjoying scent of flowering plants. St Mykholai Cathedral built on the site of ruined Knyshova Church can be noted by you in the church zone. The cathedral is notable for its sustained style, but at the same time it is attractive with plain architecture and fierce forged elements of decorations.
Majestic St Borys and Glib Church can be noted by you on Kyivs’kyi Shliakh Street at the turn to the city of Cherkasy. This grand building has been reconstructed according to drawings and sketches of the lost temple, which existed here at the times of Kyivan princes. Masterful bricklaying makes the building impressive, proportional and beautiful. The cathedral impresses with its strength and static nature.
You are advised to visit the Boryspil’ State History Museum on 89, Kyivs’kyi Shliakh Street. Outside it resembles whether a fortress or an inn. The museum was founded in 1967 on the initiative of historian Viktor Yov. Now the museum contains more than 13 thousand exhibits. Expositions of the museum can tell you about famous citizens of Boryspil’: Cossack families of the Sulims and the Bezborod’kos, as well as poet Ivan Nekrashevych and scientist-ethnographer Pavlo Chubyns’kyi. Your attention will be attracted by an exposition of Tripoli culture, a large collection of weapon, tools, jewelry and household items. Another exhibition is dedicated to the interior of peasant huts.
Don’t hesitate such opportunity to visit the most beautiful and cosy place in Boryspil’ – the central park near Uriadova Square. The park consists of memorial and entertainment parts. The memorial area is an alley with busts of the Great Patriotic War heroes. And the entertainment area can offer you various attractions, a great stadium for trainings, colourful forged pergolas in the romantic style, as well as playgrounds for children.
At the exit of the park you will see an interesting exhibit – a fragment of the road 1940s, as well as works of local blacksmiths: chic street lamps, forged refuse bins, including such trifle as a door of a cafe-bar. Another gem of the Boryspil’ park area is the park-cafe. Numerous ponds, quaint bridges, sculptures located at different ground and water levels, as well as pavilions and playgrounds create a great place for comfortable rest!
Kyiv-Kharkiv Highway and the railway go through the city. State International Airport Boryspil located there is the largest in Ukraine and is one of the most important centres of air transportation in Central Europe. It provides regular flights to 40 countries of the world and has connections with 74 cities around the world. The airport zone begins at the highway.
It is worth to visit this multi-faceted city to appreciate its uniqueness and originality.
