The State Natural History Museum
National Museum of Natural History in Lviv is located in the heart of the historical and cultural district of the city, outside the Theatre. The museum building is visible from afar - a grand mansion of the Classical period, decorated with columns.
Citizens rarely called Museum real name, preferring historical name - Palace Didushitskih by the name of its founder. It was on the initiative of Vladimir Didushitskogo - famous biologist, anthropologist and archaeologist - in 1870 and opened a museum.
Traveling, Earl Didushitsky collected many rare natural history collections, which later became the basis of the permanent exhibition of the museum. A very small amount of natural history museums can boast such a voluminous authentic museum funds. In the halls of the Lviv Museum houses more than 400,000 artifacts, many of which relate to the monuments of world importance.
One of these exhibits attracts tourists from around the world. These are the only remains of the mammoth, which is found in the Ivano-Frankivsk region in the early 20th century. Due to the high salinity of the soil "Ukrainian mammoth" superbly preserved. Today it is the most valuable zoological collections of the museum exhibit.
Looking at the remains of ancient plants and animals, museum visitors can travel back in a moment to the 18th century, up to the next floor using a mechanical lift. This device appeared in the palace Didushitskih immediately after construction, and still is in working condition.
