Mount Mithridat

Mount Mithridat

Mithridat Mountain is located on the Crimean peninsula in the city of Kerch. This huge mound reminds us of ancient burial places and is well visited by city guests. Local people believe, those have come to Kerch for the first time or after a long trip, should climb Mithridat Mountain.

Mighty ancient city Panticapaeum used to be located on Mithridat Mountain, where today you can see stone ruins of this ancient acropolis. Twenty-eight centuries ago Mithridates VI Eupator used to be the ruler of the Cimmerian Bosporus. He was a wise ruler and a commander, a descendant of Roman Emperor Alexander the Great, and shared the same views with Persian King Darius the Great. This Mountain was named after Mithridates meaning the gift of Mithra, a Persian god of the sun. In the late 6th century BC Greek god Apollo was considered to be the patron of Panticapaeum, and so a temple in his honour was built on Mithridat Mountain. At the present day we can see only columns that had escaped destruction, next to which you can take great pictures. Those who are fond of ancient culture and architecture would love this place!

The Sanctuary of Demeter, a goddess of the harvest, was another archaeological discovery on Mithridat Mountain, where this unique treasure had been hidden for centuries. On its walls you can see survived paintings where scenes of Greek mythology are depicted: the abduction of goddess daughter Kore by Hades – the god of the underworld, as well as the running god Hermes, the nymph Calypso, and of course Demeter. Her image attracts attention of travellers and is often called the Crimean Mona Lisa due to her profound look. Two of three sanctuary’s halls are open for visitors; however the admission is limited to the third hall, where the famous portrait of the Greek goddess is kept.

Mithridat Mountain is valued by Kerch citizens also due to the fact German troops were defeated on its slopes in the Second World War. In 1943, Colonel Vasyliy Gladkov led the paratroopers battalion of 318th Novorossiysk Infantry Division broke through the fascist’s defences and hoisted the red flag on the mountain’s top. Today you can see the Obelisk of Glory to the Kerch heroes and an eternal flame at this place.

Mithridat Stairs will lead you to the mountain’s top. This magnificent creature in the Classical style with observation decks, terraces and benches, located in the shade of trees, was built by architect Alexander Digbi. Along the way to Mithridat Mountain you will meet griffins – mythical creatures guarding the sanctuary. You should overcome 423 stairs to enjoy a panoramic view of Kerch Bay from 91 meters above the sea level. It’s a perfect place for beautiful and unforgettable photos. Lay flowers on the Obelisk of Glory to commemorate the valiant soldiers.

Every taxi bus, which goes through the centre of the city, can carry you to Mithridat Mountain. The main square of Kerch dedicated to the Black Sea naval fleet is located at its foot, as well as the Alexander Pushkin Theatre.
