The Church of St. George, Upper Synyovydne

The Church of St. George, Upper Synyovydne

Gold rises on the mountain wooden church, recognized as a monument of history and architecture. The Church of St. George, also known as St. George, erected on the site of the Monastery of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

According to legend, it was here, in the cells of the monks, spent the night in 1240 the Grand Duke Danilo Galitsky. He followed in Hungary to negotiate the marriage alliance between his son and Queen Constance. And waking up in the morning, I found out that Kiev was taken and plundered by hordes of Batu Khan.

In the 16th century destroyed the temple of God, and for a long time the mountain was empty. Only in the late 18th century, the church was rebuilt. Presumably, it was built on the site where was formerly the monastery church.

The building, which has become dilapidated undergone numerous repairs and restoration. Its completely rebuilt in 1939. But despite this, the wooden church has retained its original appearance, and therefore still is a shining example of Galician architecture. Today it is under the protection of the Kiev Patriarchate.

Next to the church is an old graveyard. By the way, the ruins of an old monastery and the remains of earthworks such attractive for lovers of antiquities, have survived to this day.
