The museum of rare books Nizhin

On the basis of the State University of Gogol in the beautiful ancient city is a museum of rare books. It contains rare manuscripts and ancient books, which managed to raise in the region. Today the museum has been studying, restoration and preservation of valuable material.

History museum of rare books

It was created in 1985 at the University Library. In honor of the university in 1820 to Bezborodko presented the first copies of publications. The basis of the library is 2500 volumes personal book collection of Count Alexander Kusheleva-Bezborodko, who was a trustee of high school science, the predecessor of the present University. In the future, the museum exhibits replenished by donors.

Later abundant collection:

  • valuable collections and professors of the Moscow University of Leipzig;
  • Michael`s unique historical books;
  • instances of Warsaw University and College Nijinsky.

Museum of rare books Penza State University is located on the second floor of the building of the former Merchants Assembly, which now occupies the Fundamental Library of the University.

The museum exhibition

The exhibition presents many unique European and Slavic editions 16th - early 20th centuries, including rare copies of books works:

  • Greek philosopher Plato (1513);
  • "Iliad" and "Odyssey" of Homer (1544);
  • "Aeneid" of Virgil (1567);
  • Classic Edition ages 16-18;
  • works of European thinkers.

A special pride of the museum - Gospel altar in 1689 with Nijinsky Annunciation Monastery, gift F. Jaworski. Extra-extra large tome weighs almost 18 kg, some painted by hand pages, headers - gold-plated.

How to get there

Museum of rare book is in the area of ​​Gogol. Near the river flows Oster and runs parallel to Quay Street, which is also the R67 highway. Moving on to the quay area Gogol, turn right and go to the Fundamental Library building. The museum is located on the second floor.

Museum Hours: 8:30 to 17:00, weekends - Saturday and Sunday.
