St. Nicholas Cathedral (or military Ochakiv Cathedral) in Ochakov is the oldest known architectural monument of the city and the only one that remained after the Turkish times.
Today nothing like that was ever cathedral mosque. However, regarding the origin Nicholas Church is still no consensus.
History Nicholas Cathedral
According to tradition, Nicholas Cathedral was built on the very spot where the Muslim mosque was destroyed after the capture in 1788 of the Turkish fortress Kale Aci Black Sea Cossacks and Russian troops.
In 1794 the mosque was turned into Orthodox Cathedral of St. Nicholas. From the very first built a wooden dome, and in the years 1804-1807 had major reconstruction, built a stone altar, porch and porch and stone minaret rebuilt in the tower.
During Soviet times, Nicholas Cathedral was closed, values and relics removed and placed in a room exhibits of military historical museum Suvorov. However, in the new century church parishioners returned and the museum moved into a new building. Nicholas Cathedral was restored, and built a dome and bell tower. Now, in the temple regularly conduct worship.
Interesting Facts
- In the temple buried seascape painter Rufim Sudkovskyy - Ochakov native who spent most of his city work. Over the grave of the artist set a modest monument.
- Also at the churchyard near the tomb of Ochakov commandant O. Shchetinina.
- Not far from St. Nicholas Cathedral is a monument to Alexander Suvorov.
