Monument to George. Howard, Kherson

On the Prospect Ushakova in Kherson in the sky rises a small obelisk. Surely such are many, but if you get closer, you can read on the plate, which is a memorial to John Howard - Coming from London, who did so much for the city.

The figure of John Howard

For the first time Howard comes to the Russian Empire in 1781. His interested in what this country is the first publicly rejected the death penalty. Its main purpose was to investigate hospitals and prisons. As he later recalled John Howard, conditions in institutions were very poor. Beyond this, the Englishman took philanthropist glory, because it has provided free medical care, even in the distant vyyizdyv settlement, if there was such a need.

In 1789, John Howard comes second to the Russian Empire and settled in Kherson. As it turned out, forever.

Monument to philanthropist

Four months later, in January 1790, John Howard died of typhus. Being near death, he asked his friend, Rear Admiral Pristmana, bury it around (now the village Stepanovka Suvorov district of Kherson), where he loved to walk. And requested that his grave monument put in place a sundial.

But the material from which the monument was made fragile, sundial and bust Howard had disappeared.

In 1817 the Russian Emperor Alexander I ordered to restore the monument at the grave of John Howard. But next year it was decided to put around Kherson monument obelisk that is standing still.

Interesting fact

In addition, the obelisk visible relief - profile of John Howard, and the bottom on the plate engraved inscription: «Ad sepul-chrum stans quidquid est amici», which translated into Ukrainian means: "Whoever you were, this friend is your hidden" .
