Monument to Hetman Ivan Mazepa

The monument to Hetman Mazepa is located in one of the squares of Chernigov, near the building of the collegium. The place was not chosen by chance. This building - one of the oldest educational institutions, which was built on the orders of Mazepa.

History of the monument to Mazepa

Hetman Mazepa - a very controversial person in Ukrainian history. Some consider him a traitor, while others - a hero and a fighter for independence. Recent initiated the installation of the monument.

The monument itself was made by sculptor Gennady Ershov in 1998. But the opening of the monument took place in 2009 alone. It was planned to coincide with this event dedicated to the Day of Independence of Ukraine. But the organizers were afraid of provocations on the part of disgruntled policy Mazepa. The monument was illuminated by the Bishop of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

The architecture of the monument to Hetman
