The old Polish cemetery Kovel

The old Polish cemetery in Kovel located in the southern part of the city. Here are buried the Soviet heroes of the First World War, partisans, prisoners of the Germans, as well as a special section allocated to the graves of Polish soldiers who participated in the battles of Kovel in 1918.

The plot with the graves of Poles different form of tombstones, white crosses, as well as isolated ribbon in the traditional colors of the flag of Poland. Thanks to this feature, local residents began to call this the Polish cemetery.

The history of the Polish cemetery

The first burial there after the fighting in 1917. Burials arranged without much ado, sometimes in mass graves. By the time this part of Kovel was almost vacant lot that is in the middle of the 20th century turned into a built-up city.

Among the tombs of different years can be seen:

  • Monuments Ukrainian, German, Polish soldiers of the First World;
  • Kovel prison inmates buried the 1930s;
  • German prisoners of war who died during the restoration works of the city`s 1944-1947;
  • Monuments civilians and mass graves.

How to get to the Polish cemetery in Kovel

The shortest route from the city center across the street Independence, which is full of all kinds of public transport, and crossed the cemetery. On the opposite side to the cemetery can be reached from the street Hrushevsky.
