Prison Castle, Odessa
Prison zamok- the most unusual and specific architectural monument in Odessa. Its unique feature is that the current detention center, jail, where its current prisoners sit in historic and legendary place.
The history of the castle prison
The first prison in the coastal city built in 1826 in the area of the prison, which is now the station.
In 1879, the newly created prison lock could no longer place prisoners because no small building was designed for 400 people, but their number came down to 900. So on Sept. 8, 1891 began laying new prison castle.
The city government, which at the time was headed by Gregory Marazli, allocated territory near the new cemetery along Lustdorfska road. The architect of the building was a prison AA Tomyshko. Arch main gate of the castle was designed by architect Bernardazzi.
Castle prison in Odessa was built relatively quickly. Already in 1894, on July 20 it was completed. Construction of the castle cost 843,000 rubles in silver.
Central prison building was designed as a cross, built in the Middle Gate. From her departed four wings with galleries on the sides are single camera. Each wing had a basement.
The complex of prison buildings included a smithy, bath and kitchen. Also, the building was part of the hospital for 100 people and the church.
In prison the V International Congress, held in Paris in 1895, Odessa and Moscow transit prison among 895 then operating were recognized as the best in the Russian Empire.
In 1944, after the liberation of Odessa from the prison occupiers slightly expanded, was added barricades, started work training and production workshops, production of which ceased in early `90.
In the spring of 1970 began a partial reconstruction of the prison. Was built underpass with four buildings to move prisoners from precast division, reconstruction of cameras.
In 1997, the castle was restored Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Alexander Nevsky Odessa diocesan administration.
Today sharply was the question of the reconstruction of the building. At the appropriate emergency work has already been allocated a small amount, but it is not enough. In the future we plan to update the facade of the roof replacement of plumbing and lighting.

Getting there
Prison castle in Odessa is on the street Lustdorfska road that runs next to the cemetery. Nearby is a stop on the street Breus, through which the route taxi number 177, 149, 200, 214, 215 and 220A. There is also a trolley stop number 3, 13, 26, 27 and 31.
