Nicholas Regional Museum is not just a regional museum, a place steeped in history. In 1792, the first expedition was sent sailors in Olbia. Its aim was to find antiques. By decree of the chief commander of the Black Sea ports of the Marquis de Traverse in the city was created by Cabinet of curiosities, which in 1803 was converted into a museum. History Museum in Nikolaev is among the first museums of antiquities in the Russian Empire.
In 1806, he was the only museum of New Russia, which have been gathered all the archaeological finds. In 1838 it was built a special pavilion for exhibitions. The collection was severely damaged during the Crimean War in 1856, the October Revolution and the Great Patriotic War. At this time, the exposure is constantly moved from building to building, resulting in a lot of artifacts were irretrievably lost.
In 1950, at the Museum of Nicholas begins a new life. The collection is replenished with new exhibits. Updated museum opens its doors to visitors. Since 2012, it is located in a building-monument of national importance "Staroflotskie barracks" .
In the museum there are more than 160 thousand. Pieces, all of them are divided into thematic exhibitions. This is mainly the objects of antiquity from Olbia, tools Kievan Rus, Cossack weapons and many other valuable objects.
