St Nicholas Monastery

St. Nicholas Monastery is located in Shargorod 90 km from Vinnitsa.

The history of the monastery dates back to the 18th century. It is interesting that it was built not in Shargorod, and in the nearby village of Kalinovka. At this place the monastery was due to the Polish Prince Stanislaw Lubomirski, who suffered a monastery in the city and opened it in school.

The monastery was a difficult fate: the school changed its seminary, then a religious school, and during the Soviet period the monastery was closed and turned into a museum. Later at all used normally warehouse. And only in 1996 the monastery began to revive.

In 2000, the monks Pochayiv Lavra monastery was donated Pochayevskaya copy of the miraculous icon of the Mother of God. Shrine and still occupies a central place in the monastery. For over ten years the monastery is open to visitors.

This complex will be of interest primarily to architects and art lovers, as it is a monument of architecture, which combines the structures of different periods and styles. The ensemble consists of two churches and a cathedral church, built on the model of St. Petersburg Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Lasting impression on any visitor produce facades with columns, domes and bell towers, towers and cells. Also preserved wall paintings.

Today it is not the only attraction shargoroda. Just across the road is the church of St. Florian Sharogo . And nearby is an old Ukrainian Shargorodskaya Synagogue and Museum of Fine Arts .
