Great Synagogue of Brody

The Great Synagogue - one of the attractions of defensive architecture of the town of Brody. The first synagogue came here in the late 16th century and was built of wood. Construction of the stone of the synagogue began in 1742, next to the castle Brody . Inside the synagogue is kept a stone table on which immortalized the name of Isaac Horowitz. He laid the first stone in the construction. The new synagogue was more like a square fortification. Large hall inside the synagogue meant for prayer, there was situated the shrine, kept things for worship. During a fire in 1859 most of the town was destroyed, suffered serious damage, and a synagogue.

During the Second World War, the southern and northern extensions were destroyed. In 1960 he tried to use the premises as a warehouse, the synagogue was renovated. But soon the roof began to leak, and the building was empty, which led to its destruction.

After Ukraine became independent, the authorities attempted to restore the building to accommodate an art gallery there. But did not have the means and the work was stopped. Today, the historical value and attraction of the city of Brody in ruins.
