Zhovka Castle

Lviv region is full of attractions, many of which - locks. But architectural monuments of the Renaissance in Ukraine not so much. One of them is located in Zholkva . The idea to build a castle belonged to the founder of the city of S. Zolkiewski, and created the first draft of P. Happy. In 1594 began the construction of an essential element of the fortification of the "ideal city".

The former view of the castle

The castle has a quadrangular base. The main entrance is in the form of an arch, and the building consists of three towers, the combined two-story buildings. From each of the side towers departs archway, which is connected with the building of a covered gallery. The main tower rises above the castle on two floors. Special facilities and are located inside the palace courtyard. Since 1606 the owners of the castle with guests regularly conducted hunt, which built a park-zoo near the castle where grown deer and bison.

In the 17th century King John III turned Zholkovsky castle in one of the most beautiful palaces in Europe, making it his summer residence. Of famous guests   Palace visited Ivan Mazepa and the emperor Peter   I.

Modern history

The castle was significantly damaged during the Great Patriotic War, after which it was rebuilt. Restoration work was carried out in   1972-1975 years. With the advent of Soviet power the building was used as a public institution. Later the castle was turned into a house.

Now the castle operates a small museum, which tells the story of the city, as well as open a tourist information center and the law firm. The building needs a thorough restoration, partially restored only the main entrance. Inspect the interior of the castle Zholkovsky available daily from 10:00 to 17:00.
