John the Baptist Church

John the Baptist Church

The Church of John the Baptist is located in the picturesque town Mostyska, whose history is rooted in the 11th century. Among the archival documents have official papers confirming the existence of the town in the 11-13 centuries. Until 1940 these places belonged to the Polish territory, which greatly influenced the culture and religion of local residents (excluding the years of the War of Liberation led by Bohdan Khmelnytsky in the 17th century).

The first mention of the Church of John the Baptist relate to 1550. It was a massive structure with several altars, chapels and a large hall for the parishioners. The idea to build the church belonged to the Polish king, who wished to create a real center of the Christian world for mostiskovskih citizens. Church acquired enormous popularity, it was one of the most visited temples, which later separated fence and made the tallest building in the city.

Because of the frequent fires that regularly cause damage to wooden churches, it was decided to build a stone building with an even larger area and an additional two altars. In 1722 the construction of a church in the Gothic style was completed. The church has retained its pristine architecture and most of the interior decoration. Recent restoration allowed to equilibrate the surrounding landscape and the building - the color of the walls and roof are combined with shortie fence around the church and green spaces in the flowerbeds provide a magnificent backdrop to the shrine. Next to the church is an interesting sight - Earl`s Palace, built in 1825, and the Church of the Intercession in 1636.
