Peremyshl Fortress

The fortress of Przemysl - the largest fortification in Ukraine. It was built in the mid 19th century. Remains of towers are preserved to the present day, it is located in the village of Popovici Mostyska Raion of Lviv region.

The history of the fortress of Przemysl

The main purpose of the fortress was to protect the areas of Krakow and Vienna in the days of the Austro-Russian conflict. At the time of writing, one of the three largest fortifications in Europe. There were with areas for 15 artillery forts, 27 infantry and 25 positions for heavy artillery.

Depending on changes in the ways of war - the fortress walls were constantly subjected to modernization. In 1878, they built forts on the hills surrounding Przemysl and has long been a natural barrier. The 1900s was increased wall thickness up to 3.5 m, and they were reinforced with additional steel plates. The main forts were equipped with electricity, there is also housed the elevators, pumps, fans and reflectors.

Throughout its history the fortress withstood the siege of the three largest Russian army.

  1. During the first siege of the troops were able to capture only one fort - the Bulls, but due to strong resistance from the Austrian army managed to avoid disaster.
  2. Second siege occurred November 8, 1914. It lasted 4 months, the complete defeat of the troops was applied in combat March 5, 1915.
  3. The third siege ended with the complete surrender of the fortress.

What can be seen in the fortress

Concrete structures of the fortress have survived and are available for tourists. Facilities overgrown plants, internal moves also require reconstruction, but like the original appearance makes certain romanticism to the image of the fort.

How to get to the fortress of Przemysl in Popovich

The fortress of Przemysl is located almost in the very near the Polish border, on the outskirts of Popovich, nearly 100 km from Lviv. You can get here by bus from the regional center, or on the private vehicles.
