Andrew Monument, Zaporozhye
In December 2003, the opening of a monument to Andrew in Zaporizhia. Set a cast bronze figure was decided on the square near the cathedral of the same name.
The history of the monument
Andrew was the first to recognize in Jesus the Savior and became the first student and later shared his thoughts with his brother Simon (later - St. Peter). Based on ancient documents discovered and studied by historians of the Church, Apostle Andrew was traveling along the Dnieper and preached in Zaporozhye lands, as well as the ancient Scythians and even was on the island of Khortytsya.
The author of the monument - Zaporozhye sculptor Nikolai Sobol - died on the same day when the final sketch was approved. However, the son of the famous sculptor was determined to finish the job his father and completed all necessary works on creation of the monument. At its height, the figure has been very impressive: more than 5 m.
The opening took place with the participation of His Beatitude Metropolitan Volodymyr consecrated the monument. The figure stands on a small hill, at the bottom front of the monument is a granite plaque with gilded inscription.
