Nezhinskaja fortress
Nezhinskaya fortress - is the largest fortification of 17-18 century. We have survived only a few separate buildings, all located in the central part of the city, near the main food market Nezhin.
History Nezhinskaya fortress
The history of the fortress in the city of Nizhyn begins in the 17th century, when the city came under the rule of Poland. In 1625 the policy of courageous governor Sigismund III Vasa is fully aimed at strengthening cities. In consequence of this on the left bank of the river there is a new Oster Nizhin with earthen citadel and fortifications, built on the basis of the fortifications of the Kiev Rus.
In 1665, the castle was surrounded by an earthen rampart, to protect him 11 wooden towers, 10 of which were installed gun. From the outside, the city was protected by natural barriers - the south-west stretched a deep ditch, which in the east and north of the city rests on the river Oster. To the entrance gate of the city, across the moat were built bridges that are easy to understand.
The castle housed:
- regimental office;
- powder magazines;
- guardroom;
- Artillery yard - cannon armament consisted of different weights, mostly of heavy;

- several cellars for food preservation.
The decline of the fortress fell at the end of the 18th century, when it was restructured a regular regiment of soldiers. In 1797 the walls of the city there was a large fire burned about 100 houses severely damaged and the castle. Later shafts and all leveled and filled moat.
