Cathedral of the Assumption, Kherson

Cathedral of the Assumption, which is in   Kherson , seen on the century heyday, wealth and power, as well as times of decline, destruction.   The history of the cathedral began in 1785, when commoners raised the issue of building a new church, because at that time there was only one church service in which was conducted in Greek. Charitable funds merchants Fendrikova P. and I. Sizareva on the Greek area in 1786 was the inception of the shrine. The legend associated with the construction of the temple, says that during this period stopped the plague raging in the lands of Kherson. 40,000th cash contribution Cossack, whose name does not appear in the annals of the collection, helped to complete the construction.

Shrine has gone from being an ordinary parish church to the city`s cathedral (1828), and after - the Cathedral (1853). Assumption Cathedral visited the Russian tsars Alexander I (1855) and Nicholas II (1915).

The church was closed in 1930 under the Soviet regime. Icons and elegant iconostasis were destroyed and looted, dome removed, and the bell is broken. Putting the cathedral was turned into a gym.

Since 1993, the cathedral belongs to the Orthodox Church. Today restoration work carried out.
