Church of the Assumption, Ternivka
A small area in the north of Nikolaev - Ternivka - played a big role in the city. This area is the Church of the Assumption, which has a rich and interesting history.
History Ternivka
The history of the area in the north of Nikolayev is back to the Turkish-Russian War (1787-1791 years). The prisoners wanted to become citizens of the Turkish Empire. For the future settlement, they chose a site on the bank of Ingul, which later would be called Ternovka. The Turks were Muslims, so soon in their village began building the mosque, which later became the Church of the Assumption.
History mosque
As of 1796 the mosque was built. It is known that exist in the Russian Empire norms places of worship. So mosque in Ternivka came eclectic: pronounced elements of Muslim places of worship combines traditional Russian motifs.
Russian official and writer, Paul Sumarokov, Ternivka visited in 1799. On the mosque, he wrote: "The local Brigadier Salih-Agha led us to the mosque with a beautiful stone façade structure with two minarets."
Interestingly, in the same year, the Turks left Ternivka gradually migrated to the Crimea and, more specifically, the city of Karasu Bazar (now Belogorsk).
Church history
Since 1802 the former Turkish possessions moved Bulgarians. A year later they dedicated mosque, which was the Orthodox Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin. Even the emperor donated 1200 rubles for the purchase of various church iconostasis and things.
Rebuilding the mosque has taken a long time. In the early years all efforts have focused on re-items: south nave turned to the altar, built choirs. Outside the church hardly touched, only replaced the Muslim crescent on the cross and built a wooden tower. Minarets stood until the 80s 19th century.
In Soviet times, the Church of the Assumption (like most churches) are not used for other purposes. It placed the country club. The dome and bell tower destroyed.
Restoration of the house had already begun in independent Ukraine - in 1993.
