Zvyagelskaya settlement

Zvyagelskaya settlement

On the territory near modern Novograd Volyn once lived drevlyans. This is evidenced Zvyagelskaya settlement, located just north of the city center. There was a settlement on the border of 9-10 centuries and served as protection around the principality of Kiev from the raids of various tribes.

Variously called the settlement. The first mention of it relates to 1257, when Daniel Galitsky moved to a campaign against the Tatars. The locals did not want to submit to the will of the Grand Duke and persisted in pay tribute to the Tatars, not Slavic masters, Danila Galitsky then ordered the destruction of the city. The new settlement was formed later on the site of modern Novograd Volyn.

Zvyagelskaya settlement is easy to find along the road from the city center. It is located at a distance of 5 km. Remains of the ancient settlement consists of deep ditches and embankments. Oval earth mound stands on the bluff overlooking the river.

With the advent of Soviet power in the settlement were organized archaeological expeditions. This tradition continues today, with each new excavations manage to learn more about the lifestyle of Drevlyane.
