Monument to the mammoth, Kuleshovka

Monument to the mammoth, Kuleshovka

On the outskirts of the village Kuleshovka mammoth monument. At this place in 1839 during agricultural work were found the bones of a mammoth. Made this discovery specially invited Ukrainian scholar I. Kalinichenko. In order to bring the remains of the village took six carts. Also, it was here before the border between the two powers - Moscow lands and Rzeczpospolita.

All this was the reason for the construction of the monument in 1841.   The construction is made of cast iron   and a truncated pyramid on the pedestal of the cubic form. On one face there is an inscription that says that here the border, on the other refers to the remains of a mammoth. And another legend tells that the bones were transported to the University of Kharkov . Mammoth monument was the first of its kind and in 2007 was named one of the "Seven Wonders of Sumy."
