Proletarian area

Today, nothing is said about the legendary past of this inconspicuous and underpopulated area in the center of Kharkov . During its long history it has had many names. The area began to take shape in the early   18th century and originally was called the Piazza. There were scattered small shops, wooden inn. At the dawn of the 19th century under the University Hill seething Lopan market. In 1835 a fire destroyed all the wooden buildings.

Somewhat later, this place was erected a stone Sergius number and the area was renamed Sergius. In 1875, close to a number of Sergius built trading house, where he opened the industrialized and Art Museum. It was a unique phenomenon in those days. There were exhibited paintings by Rembrandt, Goya, Van Dyck, Dürer and others.

In the late 19th century, a number of Sergius and burned in 1890, was built by Nicholas number by architect A. Spiegel. In 1932, to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the October Revolution, the area was renamed the Proletarian. All buildings on the square were destroyed during the Great Patriotic War.
