Adzhimushkay quarry
Adzhimushkayskie quarries are located 5-6 kilometers from Kerch and began its history since ancient times, there was mined limestone. Long-term work helped to create many kilometers of tunnels and galleries, which are located underground. However, their popularity they received not the reason.
History Adzhimushkay quarries
In 1942, when the Nazis were advancing on Crimea, Kerch command ordered to leave and move the main forces on the Taman Peninsula. Parts and combined detachments which covered the retreat, and have not received the order to evacuate and were surrounded by the enemy in the village Adzhimushkay. It was opened Crimean Front.
According to various sources, in the quarries were about 10,000 soldiers and 5,000 local residents. Under extreme conditions, without water, food, ammunition and weapons, they kept the defense for about six months, while producing successful forays into the enemy lines and inflict significant damage. The water situation was catastrophic and defenders dug underground wells. Army Nazis hounded people poisonous gases, suit collapses in tunnels, exploding bombs at them and fell asleep wells.
In early September, the surviving fighters in the quarries was less as the strength to fight, then stop resisting. But the remaining defenders before October did not give the opponent down into the earth, and only at the end of the month were captured. Of the 15 000 survivors were only 48.
Quarry today
In 1966 there was opened an underground museum complex, with an area of 1.1 hectares. Since the 70s there were the expedition that discovered a number of different items of unexploded ordnance, document, which reflect the life and struggle in the quarries. In 2008, the exposition was fundamentally changed, and in this form exists to this day.
How to get to Adzhimushkayskie quarries
To get to the museum is easy. To do this, at the bus station in Kerch catch the taxi №4 and go to the last stop. Quarry work every day except Monday from 9:30 to 16:30. The tour takes 1 hour and extends for almost 400 meters.
