Upper Berdyansk lighthouse

Upper Lighthouse is located in the town of Berdyansk Zaporizhia region. He is one of the oldest lighthouses in Ukraine. The lighthouse is a landmark and points the way to the port of Berdyansk , located in the Gulf of Berdyansk. It built long ago, and since then its appearance does not change. Over the last decades, it maintains all the whims of nature and the sea, pointing to the right path of the ship and the ships.

History of the Upper Berdyansk lighthouse

History of the Upper lighthouse begins with the creation of the Lower lighthouse. Back in 1833 on the pier by the sea near Berdyansk spit was a wooden pole. He served as a beacon for incoming ships. When the trade began to grow, this lighthouse has become insufficient. In 1837 began the creation of the stone lighthouse, which began work in 1838. He had served 8 lamps and so for about 30 years. Beacon had a height of 23 meters, was white to orange stripes and thus still remains.

Lower lighthouse served its function well, but later it became clear that it is not enough. When the ships returned to port, making it almost blindly. So we decided to create another lighthouse. Its built in 1877. Then it used a lamp that uses kerosene. They lit a beacon every night worker. In 1889 he got a steam whistle, it was used in heavy fog after a while it brought to the phone.

Upper lighthouse, operates to this day, shows the way ships. In 2006, it installed the newest equipment that uses less electricity and are much better in quality. Now the lighthouse itself on and off. Also installed on it a beacon, which is used when necessary.

To get to the lighthouse from the center of Berdyansk is possible on the street or Communards Shaumyan, the road is about 3 km.
