Nicholas Church, Zhitomir

Mykolaiv, or St. Nicholas Church is located in the city of Zhitomir cemetery near Smolyan. The Church has more than 120 years and in all that time never closed.

History Nicholas Church

The idea to erect a church visited a local resident of Zhitomir in 1885.. Zhytomyr Semen Matlahov wanted to build a temple on the grave of his late wife Barbara. Permission to start construction of Semen received only in 1889. In the same year it was installed a stone foundation and frame, but, unfortunately, that`s all work and over. This went on for over 7 years. Only in 1896 Nicholas Church added two on the donations of local residents, unable to finish the job Mr. Haze, he was allocated the largest amount of money. When a few years later he died, he was buried in the same church, behind the altar.

After the revolution in 1922, all the precious elements of the temple were seized by the Soviet authorities as if for the needs of the hungry. In 1927 it happened that the church burned to the ground, then it was built anew. At the end of the 30s in the city there were only two of the temple, although their priests were sent to prison, shot or deported to exile. For this reason, St. Nicholas Church remained for a short period without worship. But even in such a difficult time there always praying sisters, and the church has existed secretly. In times of war the church was working, and was visited by many worshipers.

Today, St. Nicholas Church belongs to the monuments of local importance. From time to time it repaired.
