Retro Tram, Zhitomir

Retro tram - not just a means of transportation, and a unique museum on wheels in Zhitomir. The city became the fifth in a country where there was a private electric vehicles, it happened August 22, 1899. Retro Tram in Zhitomir is one of the oldest trams in Ukraine.

Story retro tram

For more than 115 years of trams ply the streets of Zhytomyr. The first routes were built in the central part of the city, the trams were working in four areas: the center - the street Berdichevskaya center - Train station, the center - the street Vilskaya and center - River Grouse.

Amazingly, in the early 20th century, the length of the tram routes in Zhitomir exceed 12 km. The whole line was built in September 1899 a large transport company "Company urban and suburban tramways of Russia."

It is worth noting that during the revolution of 1918 tram in the city was completely closed. The reopening of a 10 August 1920 and in the period from 1956 to 1964, most of the tracks were closed altogether.

Retro-tram was rebuilt according to the original drawings of the 20th century.

Interesting Facts

The opening of the tramway in Zhitomir were glad not all citizens. In the late 19th century in the city cabs have full transport monopoly, so they declared a real war the technical innovations, the methods used are different: under the rails tossed stones and wooden logs, organized boycotts and even overturned cars.
