Customs area, Odessa

Customs area in Odessa collected on its territory a lot of history and has become an important transport links in the city. Having survived nearly two centuries, making a huge number of names, today it is an important historical site of Odessa.

History Customs Square

  • The first mention of the area occur in 1817. Tiling area near the pier on 11 June of that year.
  • The official date of establishment is considered 22 December 1828 under the title Quarantine area.
  • In 1831 it was renamed on March 14 in Plato.
  • From 1835 to 1860 was the Customs area.
  • That same year, from October 1 to June 25, 1868, it was the port.
  • By 14 July 1888 the area was Maritimes.
  • After the war, while it was called Devolanivskoyu.
  • In January 1958 the Customs area is again.
  • At the meeting of the Odessa Regional Council in December 1958 approved the renaming of the square Vakulenchuka. This is due to the wishes of workers in Odessa during the opening of the monument.
  • June 2, 1995 again called Customs area, and so it remains today.

Monuments in the area

In the Customs area to date have the following sites:

  • The first monument established in 1958 Vakulenchuka - sailor, one of the organizers of the uprising on the battleship "Potemkin". The authors of the project are sculptor and architect Kovalev V. Hnezdylov.
  • In 1965, the area placed a monument Potemkintsam - seafarers participants that rose on the battleship "Potemkin". The project involved sculptor Vladimir Bogdanov and architects Volkov and Yuri Lapin.
  • 1970, the monument Odessa port workers who died during the Great Patriotic War. The project worked sculptor S. Bighead.
  • In 1996 it was established just two sites: the first constructor port and one of the founders of Odesa F. de Volan and second founder, Admiral J. de Ribas. Both projects executed by sculptor M. Kravchenko.

From 1933 to 1938 he worked in the area Stakhanov movement founder of the Odessa region A. Petrash.

Getting there

Customs area in Odessa is located at the intersection of Seaside, Devolanivskoyi and Polish. Nearby is the railway track. From the square perfectly clear Black Sea. Driving directions can be many city bus.
