Resurrection Church

Resurrection Church

In the centre of Rivne you can see magnificent Resurrection Church. You’ll be impressed not only with its grandeur and beauty, but also with its interesting creation story, as Russian Emperor participated in the cathedral’s erection.

The first wooden church was built in 1781, which unfortunately was burned down. In 1890 Emperor Alexander III together with his family attended military exercises conducted in the city of Rivne. He had decided to make his temporary residence in Rivne. At the same place, where a long time before the old church used to be, the tsar and Volhynian Archbishop Modest laid the first stone of a new church. Laying of the first foundation stone was held in August that year after the liturgy at the name day of the royal family. The ceremony was attended by Tsar Alexander III, the ruling Archbishop, Empress Maria Fedorovna, Tsarevich Nicholas Alexandrovich, and many other notables – the Volhynians had never seen such stirring event. Count Ignatiev was a ruler of Volhynia those times and had seen to all things it required and the church had been concentrated.

Iconostasis’ were made in the Kyivan studio of Alexander Murashko. While visiting the church you will see unsurpassed craftsmanship showing up in every gilded iconostasis. It should be noted, icons on the main iconostasis of three tiers were embossed by masters against gold background.

Holy Resurrection Church is a cradle of Orthodox Christianity in the city and at the same time is a sample of church unity. The temple consists of upper and lower parts. The Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church is located in the upper part and the lower part, which is smaller, is a place where you can find the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Moscow Patriarchate.

The temple is located in the city centre, on 39 Soborna Street, and you can get there from the every part of the city.
