Countess Shcherbatova Palace

Countess Shcherbatova Palace

Refined and well-attended Countess Shcherbatova Palace located in the heart of Nemyriv undoubtedly is one of the main attractions of Vinnytsia region. In addition, this famous architectural monument has an important historical value.

Its neoclassical style attracts attention of city guests. You’ll be impressed with this two-storey rectangular palace and its remarkable park façade, along which picturesque promenade terraces are situated. At the main entrance you might notice sculptures of imperturbable and calm lions guarding castle’s spirit.

Mariya Shcherbatova was a wise and noble woman, and the last owner of the estate in Nemyriv. As a wife of Prince Alexei Shcherbatov she spent much time doing charitable and philanthropic work, organized a free hospital for poor people, a cathedral school and a high school for girls. Her work has not gone unnoticed – locals respected and genuinely loved the countess.

Unfortunately she died tragically. In January 1920 she and all her family were brutally murdered by three drunken twenty-year soldiers of the Red Guards. The Nemyriv citizens were so devoted to Mariya Shcherbatova that soon after this tragedy her killers were found dead. Her body was buried by nuns near the church. The palace of the countess was built where an old residence used to be under the project of Czech architect Irzhi Stibrala and it took over 30 years – from 1885 to 1917. During the First World War the countess turned her palace into a military hospital, where she worked as a nurse.

This paragraph is devoted to a huge beautiful park around the estate. It’s remarkable due to its territory of 85 ha, where more than 160 species of trees and shrubs grow. One may think, such old and huge park should have a magical tree and it has! When the only son of Mariya Shcherbatova had married, she gave her gardener a difficult task – to find a tree in the park, which would symbolize this event. The gardener has not coped with this task. One day the countess was walking under shadow of the trees and found the tree she was looking for. A huge oak tree with a trunk divided into three branches impressed Mariya Shcherbatova. At the wedding ceremony she wished a newly formed family was like that oak. Right and left branches symbolised her son and his wife, and the median one – the countess to protect their welfare forever. Now this oak tree is considered to be the tree of love. Just married couples come there with hope to make their family life stronger. While touching this magic oak they ask for inexhaustible love and family happiness.

In front of the building you’ll notice a flower meadow. A small lake used to be at this place in former times. The countess loved to come there to see beautiful swans and relax. But after her groom had accidentally drowned in it, Mariya Shcherbatova ordered to dry the lake and plant flowers instead. They still bloom there and decorate the courtyard of the palace.

In 1921 Avangard Sanatorium was opened at the palace. People from all over the country and the world come here to improve their health and enjoy the beauty of this place.

A portrait of the countess hangs above the fireplace in the lobby of the palace. Many historic interiors can be noted by you there as well. Art Gallery at the palace contains more than 400 exhibits, many of which were written by Ukrainian artists, who often leave their canvas after visiting the sanatorium.

People say you might see a silhouette of a woman in white appearing in one of windows early in the morning. It is believed the countess cares about her picturesque estate.

At this place you’ll forget about your fuss and problems, and fill your heart with peace and tranquillity instead.
