Berezan Island
In the Black Sea, opposite the mouth of the Southern Bug River, 8 km from the city Ochakov is a small uninhabited island of Berezan length of only about 1 km away. It is interesting for its history dating back to the days of antiquity. Then it was a peninsula, and from the end of the 7th century BC. e., it housed an ancient Greek settlement Borisfen.
Later began to develop near the ancient city of Olbia. Today the island Berezan is a member of the National Historical and Archaeological Reserve "Olivia" . Archaeologists have unearthed on the island labyrinth of underground structures. But most of the mysteries of ancient times still keeps Berezan.
On the island is home to birds, lizards, snakes. There were no trees, no bushes - only field of grass. Perhaps this island, called Buyan, mentioned in Pushkin "The Tale of Tsar Saltan".
Berezan was fixed for the second name - the island of Lieutenant Schmidt. In 1906, by a court of tsarist Russia are shot rebel squadron commander of the Black Sea Fleet and the leaders of the uprising on the cruiser "Ochakov". Schmidt is set on the island monument .
