Saint Elizabeth Fortress

Fort St.. Elisabeth was built in 1752 for the purpose of defense of the South of Ukraine from the raids of the Tatars and Turks. Construction is named after the patron saint of the Empress Elizabeth, who signed a decree on the construction of the fortress. Ramparts initiated Yelisavetgrad city, which was subsequently renamed Kirovograd .

The fortress consists of a plurality of shafts, bastions, watchtowers and moats of the whole system, it was very well equipped with artillery weapons. Throughout its history the castle, only once was the scene of the fighting, it happened during the Russian-Turkish war of 1768-1774. Massive construction played a decisive role in the victory over the enemy.

The fortress was still a party to many legendary events in the history of Ukraine and World History. For example, in its barracks once housed shelves Kutuzov. Here was the headquarters of the fight against HAYDAMAKY and more.

Now disarmed and fortress is a museum in the open air. Tourists are met old cannons - witnesses of past glory and power. Also in the fortress there is a cemetery of dead soldiers heroically in battles of World War II, the center of which is a monument to "Eternal Flame".

Fort St.. Elizabeth every year attracts hundreds of tourists from Ukraine and all over the world who are interested in the history of the military exploits of yore.
