Nativity Church (Jesuit Cathedral)

Nativity Church (Jesuit Cathedral)

Cathedral of the Nativity - one of the most prominent churches of the ancient Vladimir-Volyn. This magnificent building with a magnificent baroque architecture is more like a royal palace and lookout tower, rather than the traditional church building.

Construction of the temple began in the mid-18th century, in 1755. Management of the city assumed that the building will be owned by the Jesuit Order. When completed in 1762 the Catholic church was particularly monastic status. Then, in the short term power in the city, along with the dominant religion changed. Since 1840 the Jesuit church became Orthodox church. Thanks to the incomparable architecture and spacious halls inside the building was used as a temporary residence of the Orthodox rulers. This lasted until the 1920s, while the Roman Catholic Church did not return to his church property. But with the outbreak of the Second World War changed the power again, and in the second half of the 20th century, the temple becomes Cathedral of the Nativity.

It is worth paying attention to the unusual exterior of the church: a talented architect employed an interesting approach in architecture - visually, perfectly straight lines and shapes, clearly form a semicircular bend of the main facade. Such a decision is a rarity among the buildings of the 18th century, especially in combination with elegant decoration of the walls in the form of stepped columns and bulk recesses. Vladimir-Volyn can be seen earlier architectural masterpieces - Dominican monastery of the 15th century and Shafts citadel , built in the 10-11 centuries.
